OnePlus four years of updates

TL;DR

  • OnePlus will extend the same update commitment as the OnePlus 11 to the OnePlus 11R.
  • The company has confirmed that the cheaper phone will also get four years of Android updates and five years of security patches.

Update: February 16, 2023 (3:40 AM ET): OnePlus Support has taken a U-turn on its previous statement about the OnePlus 11R getting four years of Android updates and five years of security patches. In a new tweet, the company has clarified that the 11R will get only three years of OS updates and four years of security updates.

The OnePlus Support Twitter handle apologized for the previous miscommunication and said that the new extended update policy is meant for “selected devices.” For now, that list only included the OnePlus 11.

Hi! We would like to clarify about our previous tweet, we offer 4 years of android updates and 5 years of security updates on selected devices. For #OnePlus11R, the device will receive 3 years of android updates and 4 years of security updates. Apologies for the miscommunication.

Original article: February 13, 2023 (2:51 AM ET): The OnePlus 11 launched recently and became the first OnePlus phone to take advantage of the company’s new update policy. It’s slated to get four years of Android updates and five years of security patches, right up there with Samsung’s industry-leading upgrade commitment. However, the new OnePlus flagship isn’t the only device that’ll enjoy this perk.

According to a tweet by OnePlus support (h/t Abhishek Yadav), the newly launched OnePlus 11R will also get four years of OS and five years of security updates. The device launched with Android 13 on board, which means it should see updates till Android 17, making it the second OnePlus device with the longest software update commitment.

OnePlus 11R Updates Tweet

The OnePlus 11R is a Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 phone exclusive to India. It’s a close match to the globally-selling OnePlus 10T but offers a few minor upgrades and a cheaper price tag. The fact that OnePlus is trickling its flagship update policy down to its more affordable handsets is a positive sign for sure. We hope to see other cheaper OnePlus lines, like the Nord series, also get the same treatment in the future.
