The OnePlus Open gets a lot right, but it’s hard to recommend when an extra $100 will get you better water resistance, wireless charging, and — in the case of the Galaxy Z Fold 5 — a more mature foldable software experience. The Open stands to make OnePlus fans who have been hoping for a folding phone quite happy — at least those who are sticking around in the company’s Oppo-ified era.

Hands on: The world of folding phones has quickly become so populated that it takes a fair bit of effort for a new arrival to stand out from the pack. What I can tell you about the price is that $1,600 isn’t bad for a foldable — that, of course, is a pretty massive qualifier here. Both the Google Fold and Galaxy Z Fold are $200 more. In this brave new world of folding screens, I suppose that affordability should be approached in relative terms. Do I think the Open would sell like gangbusters if it was priced to compete with, say, the Galaxy Z Flip? Sure. Do I think that’s realistic given the current cost of foldable components? Perhaps not.
